I was invited to operate with the K3LR team in the 2004 CQ World Wide DX Contest, Phone. K3LR is in western Pennsylvania, very near to the Ohio border. We operated in the M/2 category, finished in first place in the USA, and set a new USA record score (results pending.) I didn't take quite as many photos as I probably should have.

Bob Naumann N5NJ, on 40 meters. Bob also travelled from Texas to operate at K3LR.
You can see much of the basement station, from 15 meters on the left to 10 meters in the center, to 20 meters on the right. In the foreground, you can see the edge of the desk at the 80 meter position. 40 meters would be off-frame to the right, and 160 meters would be off-frame to the left.
Some of the towers outside at K3LR. The car you see in the distance is driving on IH-80.
Another one of the towers at K3LR. Supposedly, you can see these towers not just from the interstate highway, but also from the official Pennsylvania state welcome center.
The big five-element 20 meter yagis. Every antenna is rotatable. The antennas below the top of the tower use TIC Ringrotors.
By the end of October, most of the trees had lost their leaves. This one with the red leaves still had about half of its foliage.
Lots of antenna hardware. Tim uses fiberglass rod to guy his towers.
In the distance, you can see the field of two 80 meter four squares and the 160 meter vertical.
A closer view of the field of verticals. Eight of these are for the two 80 meter four squares, and one is a 160 meter vertical. The low band antenna phasing is all done with Comtek Systems hardware.
Fall leaves on the lawn.
Fall color on the trees. We rarely get this in Texas, and certainly never as early as October.
John Dorr K1AR on the 20 meter run station, with John Golomb N2NC on the 20 meter multiplier radio. Both are WRTC veterans. Behind them, Phil Koch K3UA (another WRTC veteran) is on 10 meters. Bob Naumann N5NJ and Tim Duffy K3LR are also WRTC veterans. I was operating in great company! |
